The book to be illustrated for The Book Illustration Competition 2017 is Mansfield Park by Jane Austen.
At a young age Fanny Price is taken from the poverty of her parents’ life in Portsmouth to be brought up alongside – but never quite equally with – her wealthy cousins at Mansfield Park. Her uncle, Sir Thomas Bertram, is absent and into that vacuum arrive the glamorous, sophisticated Crawfords.
Published in 1814, Mansfield Park was Austen’s third novel and the most commercially successful of those published within her lifetime. Fanny is one of Austen’s most controversial heroines – insipid to some, quietly courageous to others. Either way the novel remains morally intriguing, with Austen’s satire as whip-smart as ever.
Mansfield Park will be the fourth in a series of Austen books published by The Folio Society, following editions of Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility.
